Volt Stick LV50 voltage detector developed for National Grid US

More than 25 years ago, Volt Stick were approached by National Grid to develop a Volt Stick that would help to protect their gas workers from electrical shock hazards.

They required a non-contact voltage detector to detect voltages of 50 Volts and above as this was the touch potential safety threshold set by both the UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the US's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

The detector also needed to be intrinsically-safe so that it could be used in a natural gas environment. And so the ATEX and IECEx -certified Volt Stick LV50 was developed and has since been used by National Grid in both the UK and US.

Volt Stick approved for National Grid US field technicians

National Grid US is an electricity, natural gas and clean energy delivery company, with 17,000 employees serving over 20 million people through their networks in New York and Massachusetts.

Every National Grid US gas field worker carries a Volt Stick LV50 and uses it to check for hazardous voltages on any metallic surface or metal pipe before they work on it.

The National Grid US vision is to eliminate fossil fuels from their gas and electric systems by 2050 or sooner. They have joined forces with the Town of Hempstead for the HyGrid Project, which is located on Long Island and is one of the first and largest clean hydrogen projects in the US. The project has locally produced 'green' hydrogen for vehicles and is now planning to expand by blending the hydrogen in to their Natural Gas distribution system.

In preparation, Volt Stick are already working to upgrade the Volt Stick LV50 to meet the safety requirements for hydrogen and aiming to continue to help safeguard nationwide grid gas workers from electrical hazards for many more years to come.
